At ByCommute, we design locking solutions to suit every closed bike shelter and every type of site: local authority, company, landlord, or isolated site. Each context requires a different level of security, which is why we have developed a range of systems, from the simplest to the most advanced.

We distinguish three main families of locking systems, according to their level of control, autonomy and intelligence.

1. Understand the different types of locking systems

Diagram showing three types of locking systems for bike shelters: mechanical locks, unconnected electronic systems, and connected access control.

Mechanical systems

These are the simplest, most reliable and maintenance-free systems. There are two main options:

  • The standard key lock: tried-and-tested, robust, ideal for limited use.

  • The mechanical keypad: no batteries, no wiring, just a single shared code.

This type of solution is particularly suitable for small residences, low-use shelters or sites without electricity.

Comparison of two Locinox locking systems for bike shelters: conventional mechanical key lock and mechanical code lock with integrated keypad.

Unconnected electronic systems

The battery-operated electronic keypad represents an intermediate option. It offers greater flexibility than a mechanical code, while remaining simple to install.

  • Multiple user codes can be programmed.

  • No need for networks or cabling.

  • Autonomous thanks to battery power supply (change every 1-2 years).

This system is ideal for companies, social landlords or shared facilities.

Intelligent access control systems

The most advanced solution is based on a connected access control kit. This can include :

  • An electronic cylinder compatible with RFID badges (including MIFARE).

  • An anti-vandal remote keypad.

  • A communication box (4G, Wi-Fi or Ethernet) for remote management.

  • A management interface via mobile application (user or administrator).

This system enables access to be managed in real time, temporary or permanent codes to be assigned, openings to be tracked, and the whole system to be secured without any technical constraints.

The advantage of ByCommute is that all these systems are compatible with each other: you can start with a mechanical system and switch to an electronic or connected system later, without changing the shelter.

2. Comparison of access modes

Overview of access management options for bike shelters, including online and offline modes, Bycommute compatibility and scalable features.

Features available through the administration interface

All accesses can be managed via a dedicated application (admin) or a web platform supplied by ByCommute. This interface allows you to :

  • Add or remove users at any time (via badge or code)

  • Create permanent or temporary accesses (e.g. a code valid for 24 hours)

  • Define automatic opening hours (e.g. free opening from 7am to 7pm)

  • Manage multiple shelters or sites from a single account

  • Assign a unique badge or code to each user

  • Track entries and exits: history by date, time and user

  • Limit the number of simultaneous users if necessary

Multi-site management

The management platform can be used to administer several bike shelters located at different sites. Each shelter can have :

  • Its own access rules

  • Its own users

  • Its own time slots

This feature is ideal for local authorities or multi-site companies.

On-line or off-line administration

Two operating modes are possible:

  • Connected mode (with 4G, Wi-Fi or Ethernet box)
Allows real-time remote management, with access synchronization and log consultation at any time.
Ideal for communities, campuses, companies with high turnover
  • Offline mode (badge or stand-alone keypad)
Accesses are configured locally (via USB key or proximity app). No network connection is required for operation.
Recommended for remote sites or those without an available network

6. Power supply and integration of locking systems

To operate, a locking system may need energy (electronics, communication, opening relays). At ByCommute, all our equipment is designed to be easy to install, self-sufficient if required, and perfectly integrated into any shelter.

Here's how our systems are powered and integrated, depending on the configuration.

Available power supply modes

  • Solar power supply
Our access control kits are compatible with ByCommute solar kits.
The shelter becomes self-sufficient in energy, with no need to connect to the grid.
Ideal for isolated sites, communities with no electrical infrastructure, or temporary parking lots.
  • Mains-powered (230 V)
If a power supply is available on site, the kit can be connected directly.
This enables the system to be powered continuously, without the need for batteries or energy maintenance.
  • Battery-powered (for simple systems)
    Stand-alone electronic keypads are battery-operated.
Battery life from 12 to 24 months depending on use.
    No wiring required.

Component positioning

  • The control box (relay, power supply, connectors) is located inside the shelter or in a secure compartment.

  • The electronic cylinder is installed directly in place of a standard mechanical cylinder (European compatible).
Electronic locking cylinder with green illuminated button, used for connected access control of secure bike shelters.
  • The badge reader and/or keypad is positioned outside the shelter, on a metal plate or integrated into the door.

  • The exit button is installed inside the shelter, close to the door.

  • The communication box (4G, Wi-Fi or Ethernet) is placed :

    • or in the solar box

    • in the shelter (if technical space is provided)

    • or in a small, unobtrusive external box → It must be located within 8 meters of the system to be controlled.

Good integration practices

  • All wiring is supplied in the correct length for the shelter.

  • Installation is carried out by ByCommute or a trained installer.

  • A layout sheet is supplied to validate the location of each element.

  • If in doubt about feasibility (orientation, distance, network, etc.), a technical study can be carried out beforehand.

Compatible with all shelter models

  • All systems are compatible with enclosed shelters ByCommute: wood, steel, container, single or double leaf.

  • You can install a connected system on an existing shelter, or equip a new one as soon as it is delivered.

  • The components are discreet and suitable for outdoor use.

Whatever the configuration of your site, there's a power supply solution to suit. Our systems are designed to be integrated neatly, without detracting from the shelter's aesthetics, and to operate reliably, even in difficult conditions.

7. Scalability and compatibility of locking systems

Security needs evolve over time: a shelter that was supposed to be accessible to 5 people can now be used by 50 six months later. At ByCommute, our locking systems have been designed to adapt easily to these changes, without the need for structural changes or complete replacement.

Our equipment is both compatible with all our shelter models and scalable in terms of use, time and technology.

Universal compatibility

  • All the locking systems on offer (mechanical, electronic, connected) are compatible with all enclosed shelters ByCommute.
