Table of contents
First step: what size bike shelter do you need?
How many bikes can be stored?
Storage shed size you'll need depends on what you want to store! How many bikes? How big are they? How many accessories will go with them?
- 1 bike requires a 183 cm x 61 cm shelter
- 2 bicycles require a 183 cm x 91 cm shelter
- 3 bikes require a 183 cm x 122 cm shelter (or sometimes 183 cm x 91 cm)
- 4 bikes require a 183 cm x 152 cm shelter (or sometimes 183 cm x 122 cm)
- 5 bikes require a 183 cm x 152 cm shelter
Of course, these figures are just a snapshot general indication. You can have a larger bike. Or a bicycle with a child seat. You can have a bike a lot smaller. You may want to store only children's bicycles.
Clearly, the only answer here is to measure your bikes and anything else you plan to store in the shelter!
Il est conseillé d’être généreux. L’abri doit être easy to use. And if you have to cram everything in so that there's no room for the manoeuvreit will become very stressant and annoying !
How do I get to the bikes?
It's not just a question of whether they will actually enter the shelter, it's also important to consider the process for loading and unloading bikes.
In an ideal shelter, each bike should be able to be added or removed without disturbing the other bikes already stored.
This means that bicycles enter from vertically (forwards or backwards) rather than laterally. Unfortunately, there aren't many bike shelters that make this possible!
If you have a few bikes and they're not used frequently, it's not a big problem to store them in the back.
On the other hand, if several people frequently use several bikes, it's preferable to find a shelter that allows easy access to the bikes stored at the front of the stall.
Location (where will it go?)
When considering the purchase of a abri de jardin ou pour votre entrepriseWhen you're planning a new home, it's important to think not only about what you're going to store in it, but also where you're going to place it.
This can affect the size options available to you.
Factors such as limited floor spaceand height restrictions due to fences or walls, and building permit restrictions can all have an impact on the shelter site.
It's important to find a place sec and dish not only to position the shelter, but also to provide easy access and open the doors.
Location and safety
For private customers :
When choosing a location for a bike shelter, you also need to take safety into account. A bike shed in the front garden or yard, visible to all passers-by, is more vulnerable to theft than a hidden shed in the backyard.
However, the bike shelter doesn't have to be completely hidden, as a door visible from the house is less attractive to thieves than one they can try to break down unnoticed.
Hiding from thieves or from you?
Step 2: What should the bike shelter be made of?
You basically have three options here: plastic (resin or vinyl), metal or wood.
Each has its own benefits and its disadvantages.
Wood is the material that has traditionally been used to make garden sheds since they were invented!
Wooden bike shelters
- An attractive appearance
- Easier to customize and enhance
- Solid and sturdy
- Respect for the environment
- Requires annual maintenance
- Generally not very safe
- Risk of rot, insects and rodents
Wooden bicycle sheds are an option cost-effective and solid for the outdoor storage bicycles. They come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and can be easily personalized to meet your needs.
A wooden bicycle shelter is an option ecological for bicycle storage. However, wooden shelters require regular maintenanceas the wood reprocessing and roof relining.
In addition, it may be necessary to protect the shelter from rodents, insects and other animals, and to keep an eye on rot.
What's more, the level of safety wooden bicycle sheds are the default choice. often mediocre and additional measures must be taken to reinforce safety.
Lap siding: Poor
Tongue-and-groove siding : Good
When choosing a wooden bike shelter, make sure that the planks you use have a high quality. minimum thickness of 12 mm for adequate resistance. Opt for a tongue-and-groove construction rather than the less durable overlap cladding. For more information on wooden bike shelters and their construction, please consult a detailed guide to the subject.
Metal bicycle sheds
Visit metal shelters have been commonly used for bicycle storage for a long time and, although they are not considered a traditional shelter material, they are practical for bicycle storage.
Metal shelters
- Very safe
- Solid and durable
- Maintenance-free
- Anti-rot, anti-insect and anti-rodent
- Visually unappealing
- Difficult to assemble
- Risk of condensation and rust
The main advantage of metal bicycle shelters is the high level of safety they offer.
Metal shelters offer superior protection against theft compared to other outdoor storage options. What's more, they're highly resistant to climatic conditions such as fading, cracking and bending in the sun, and are able to withstand snow and wind.
Metal shelters can be very safe.
A metal shelter that has been properly galvanized will not rust and is resistant to rodents, insects and other animals.
They require very low maintenance and should only be cleaned occasionally with soapy water.
However, metal shelters aren't as visually appealing as other options and are difficult to customize, as they can't be painted or easily modified with shelves or hooks.
Metal shelters can also be suffer from condensation if not properly ventilated.
Assembling a metal shelter can be a daunting task!
When considering the purchase of a metal bicycle shelter, it's important to know that assembly can be difficult and time-consumingbecause it often involves small, heavy parts.
What's more, most metal shelters have no floor, so you need to prepare a flat, dry base!
When choosing a metal enclosure, look for panels of at least 0.25 mm thickness for adequate strengthmake sure the shelter is properly ventilated to avoid condensation, and be prepared for assembly to take a day or two.
Plastic bicycle shelters
Plastic (also known as resin) garden sheds are the most popular new local children. And more and more of them popular.
Plastic shelters
- Easy to assemble
- Weatherproof
- Maintenance-free
- Resistant to rot, insects and rodents
- Can look cheap and "fake".
- Difficult to customize and improve
- Less robust than others
Plastic bike shelters are easy.
- They're easy to transport (because they're so light).
- They're easy to assemble (because they're so light and there are so few parts).
- They are easy to maintain (as they do not rot or rust).
- And they're also easy to buy (because they're relatively cheap)!
They are safe from insects and rodents. What's more, modern plastics are less likely to discolor, become brittle or crack in sunlight.
An occasional wash is all the maintenance you need!
In the end, the bicycle shelters require very low maintenance. Once assembled, all you need to do is clean them occasionally with soap and hot water. However, most plastic shelters are not very attractive.
They may look cheap, and are generally not customizable.
They are also less resistant than wooden or metal shelters and can be damaged by strong winds or heavy snowfall. In addition, exposure to direct heat and sunlight can cause some plastics to bend, and they can also be exposed to condensation if not properly ventilated.
Plastic shelters tend to be less robust than other types.
So when you choose a plastic shelter, look for those with steel supports in the roof and walls (for greater resistance), and double walls and ventilation grilles (to avoid condensation) and a UV protection (to reduce discoloration and brittleness).
Metal storage sheds are generally the safest. Then plastic shelters. And finally, wooden shelters.
Metal is obviously the building material the most resistant. Their locks are generally of very high quality. And metal bicycle shelters are usually specifically designed for safety.
Plastic shelters tend to be slightly safer than wooden ones, only because when attacked, plastic will bend rather than tear like wood. But neither plastic nor wooden shelters are generally designed with safety as a priority. A concerted attack will defeat them both.
It's easy to increase the security of a wooden bicycle shelter!
The difference is that there are many things you can do to increase the safety of a wooden shelterA plastic shelter, on the other hand, is much more limited.
So, in the end, if you put in a little effort, wooden shelters can actually be much safer than plastic ones!
If they are not (or if you think the coverage is insufficient), consider specialized bicycle insurance.
Environmental impact
Without a doubt, wood is the most environmentally friendly of the three building materials. Unlike metal or plastic, it draws carbon from the atmosphere as it grows, and stores it over the lifetime of the shelter. So the wood in a wooden shelter has a negative carbon footprint. At the same time, huge quantities of CO2 and pollutants are produced during the manufacture of metal and plastic.
All plastics and metals used in other shelters can be recycled. And that's all very well. But don't forget that the recycling process also produces CO2!
Trees store carbon. Wooden shelters therefore have a negative carbon footprint!
After all that, we also have to think about sustainability.
How long will your shelter last?
Whatever type of shelter you choose, make sure it's of good quality and built to last. "Buy cheap and buy twice" goes the old adage. It's not only uneconomical, it's also bad for the environment.
If you choose a wooden shelter, make sure the wood comes from a sustainable source. Ideally, look for wood sourced close to home with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accreditation.
And make sure you're committed to shelter maintenance! But if you choose a metal or plastic shelter, buy the best quality you can afford, ideally from an established company that publishes specific, responsible environmental commitments.
Green roofs?
A green roof on your bike shed can have a positive environmental impact.
By covering it with plants such as sedumIt can capture CO2, increase biodiversity and provide shelter and food for insects and pollinators. What's more, it can protect the shelter's roof from extreme temperatures and sun damage, prolonging its lifespan.
A commercial bicycle shelter with a green roof
Many companies specializing in the construction of bicycle shelters offer the option of a green roof. However, it's important to be careful when making this choice, as different types of green roof have different levels of environmental impact. A poorly chosen green roof can even fail within a few months. It's worth researching different options before making a decision.
At ByCommute we attach great importance to the environmental aspect of our design, which is why we conceive our shelters in an eco-responsible manner. If you'd like to have a green roof, please don't hesitate to contact us. Contact us
Wood, metal or plastic?
A wooden shelter will appeal to those who prefer a traditional aestheticsThey're willing to carry out regular maintenance work, and feel comfortable improving the functionality and safety of their shelter themselves.
Metal shelters will appeal to those who prefer high security and low maintenance who don't care what the shelter looks like, and who are ready for a potentially difficult assembly process.
Plastic shelters will appeal to those looking for a easy life !
They'll want a easy assembly, easy maintenance and in general they won't care too much about high security or the shelter's appearance

The best plastic shelters for 2-3 bikes
If you are in the UK and have limited space, the Lifetime 183 x 89 cm is an excellent choice for storing up to 3 bikes. It is a better choice than the Keter Store-It Out Ultra [Amazon] as it is slightly larger and considerably safer. You can read a detailed review of the Lifetime 183 x 89 cm on the plastic bike shelters page.
The best plastic shelters for 3-4 bikes
If you have more space or need to store more bikes, switching to plastic shelters with sliding roofs and more depth is a good choice, as you'll be able to easily roll your bikes inside.
The Suncast 183 x 122 cm Glidetop Storage Shed [Amazon] can store up to 4 adult bikes side by side for easy access. You can read more about why I love the Suncast Glidetop on the plastic bike shelters page.
The storage shed Rubbermaid 183 x 122 cm Slide-Lid is almost identical in size and function to the Suncast. But I think the way you lock it (with a metal ring) is slightly more secure. You can also find out more about the Storage Shelter Rubbermaid 183 x 122 cm Slide-Lid on the plastic bike shelters page.
The best wooden bike shelters: Economical
Although cheap wooden bike shelters are often a bad investment, it is possible to find quality shelters at low prices if you look hard enough. The bicycle storage shed Forest 198.12cm x 78.74cm is an example of this kind of bargain.
With a 28 x 28 mm frame, the Forest is not as strong as the Power wooden shelters below (which are built with a 44 x 28 mm frame).
But it has good quality 12 mm tongue-and-groove wood cladding, which is unusual for a cheaper bike shelter. The wood is FSC-approved, pressure-treated and guaranteed not to rot for 15 years. And with wide doors, you'll have no problem getting up to three bikes in and out.
However, if you want to store anything else, 2 bikes is probably the limit of space. The door hinges are hidden, which is great for security. And although the latch and hook that hold the door don't come with a padlock, it gives you the option of buying something really decent to keep thieves at bay!
The best wooden bike shelters: Mid-range
Power bike shelters come in 2 different styles (pitched or peaked roofs) and 5 different sizes (for 1 to 6 bikes)!
They're really well made, easy to assemble, come with a 10-year warranty, and will last up to 25 years if you take good care of them. What's more, the customer service you'll get from Power is exceptional.
If you need a really secure storage shelter, you'll need to do a bit of work on it (replace the hinge fixings with security screws and add an extra lock). But these are inexpensive and easy modifications for anyone.
I think Power shelters are an excellent choice if you're looking for a high-quality wooden shelter that won't break the bank. To find out more about Power shelters, visit our wooden bike shelters page.
The best wooden bike shelters: Top of the range
Available in two styles (one taller with storage) and two sizes (one for 3 bikes, one for up to 5 bikes). All the security you'll need is already included. And delivery includes assembly and on-site installation. What more could you ask for? Find out more about bike shelters from The Bike Shed Company on the wooden bike shelters page!
If you need storage space for more than 5 bikes, why not opt for the Bespoke Bicycle Store from The Posh Shed Company.
They are available in two styles (one taller with storage) and two sizes (one for 3 bikes, one for up to 5 bikes). They're built like tanks.
All the security you need is already included.
And delivery includes on-site assembly and installation. What more could you ask for? Find out more about The Bike Shed Company shelters on the wooden bike shelters page!
If you need storage space for more than 5 bikes, why not opt for The Posh Shed Company's Bespoke Bicycle Store?
Looking more like a luxury garden shed than a bike store, the Bike Store actually contains space for up to 8 bikes, large double doors for easy entry and exit, and plenty of storage space for all your cycling gear inside.
Every Bike Store is built to last, with triple-layer walls, a cedar shingle roof, 18 mm waterproof plywood flooring and a hidden layer of waterproof membrane throughout. You even get exterior gutters!
From a security point of view, the thick frame and triple-layer walls will already be difficult to break into. But combined with internal hinge fixings, a 5-point lever lock and no windows, it will probably be harder to break into than a house!
The best metal bike shelters: Mid-range
As far as I know, the Duramax Bicycle Store [Amazon] is the only mid-priced metal shelter specifically designed for bicycles!
It's deep enough to store up to four bikes, facing forward, so accessing the bikes is as simple as rolling them in or out of the shelter.
And there are four ramps that can be set at different heights to prevent the bikes' handlebars from colliding.
The metal sheets are thicker than average metal shelters (for extra strength and security). And it comes with a decent built-in lock. Plus, there are vents to prevent condensation.
You'll need to set aside some time to assemble it.
But if you're looking for an affordable metal bike shed for four bikes, it's hard to find anything better!
The best metal bike shelters: Top of the range
The safest bicycle shelters are made of metal. And Asgard manufactures the safest metal bicycle shelters. That means an Asgard bike shelter is really, really safe!
Their metal panels are thicker than other shelters. Their locks are stronger than other shelters. Their hinges are better protected than other shelters. So, all in all, they're virtually impregnable!
Asgard bike shelters come in a variety of shapes and sizes, accommodating between 1 and 12 bikes. Here I've chosen the Asgard, which can store up to 4 bikes.
It has an integrated metal floor (unusual for metal shelters), easy access through the front doors and a gas-assisted roof, and a 10-year anti-rust warranty. You can find out more about Asgard shelters and how they compare with Trimetals' high-security bike shelters on the metal bike shelters page.
Building your bike shelter
You'll need to build the bike shelter you choose, whether it's made of plastic or wood.
Plastic shelters are easy to assemble yourselfThe assembly time is usually less than 3 hours. Wooden shelters can be assembled in an afternoon. It's important to note that better-quality shelters are easier to assemble. It is therefore advisable not to opt for cheap products.
Building a wooden bicycle shelter should take between 2 and 4 hours.
Metal shelters are an entirely different story. They can be quite difficult to assemble and a complex shelter can take up to two days for two people. However, most shed stores offer the option of installation in addition to delivery. If you have doubts about your ability to build a shelter yourself, or if you don't feel like it, it may be worth considering this option.
Of course, if you're a little more skilled at DIY and want to save money, you can create your own bike shelter. There are many plans and tutorials and if you have the tools and are willing to invest the time, it could be worth it.
Shelter base/foundation
Unless you're placing your new bike shelter on a perfectly level terrace or driveway, you'll also need to install a base for the shelter.
These are the foundation on which your shelter will rest keep it level and away from moisture.
If you don't build the shelter on a level base, it will be difficult to erect. (as nothing will align correctly) and once built, it will be unstablewhich can make difficult to open and close the door and even cause all the shelter's windows to break! What's more, a structurally unstable shelter will see considerably reduces its useful life.
A shaky shelter won't last long
If you don't keep the shelter away from moisture, wooden shelters will quickly start to rot and fall into disrepair very quickly.
Plastic and (to a lesser extent) galvanized metal shelters are not as susceptible to water damage themselves, but if they are installed on damp ground, the air inside the shelter becomes damp, which will damage your frame and bike components.
So it's absolutely essential to have a solid, level base that keeps your shelter off the ground! There are several different types of shelter base, the most popular being: wooden frames, paving slabs, plastic base kits and concrete slabs. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.
Abri vélo : résumé
